Today's effort.  Something small while I wait for large painting I started yesterday to dry.

New Painting - 20"x24" - Oil on Canvas

Third day of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge and I'm heading off in another direction; that's so me.  :D.  Actually the whole idea behind 30 in 30 is to get you painting, so it's all good!

This morning I got an idea for a new painting and I prefer to paint big, so this is my start on a new 20"x24" canvas.  I don't know about you, but I love seeing the painting emerge from the canvas.

This is the initial, day 1, block in.  Eventually it will be a snow scene, but I won't add light colors until today's efforts dry.

30 in 30

January 1, 2015 is the start of a new 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge.  This challenge was started by Leslie Saeta and I believe there are over 800 artists worldwide who have signed up to participate.  There are no rules other than have fun!  If I miss a day, no sweat.  This is simply a tool to get me motivated and in the mode of painting everyday.

As you can see from the painting below this post, I started on the 2nd, so I'm already blazing my own trail.

Brand New Painting - In Progress

Hi!  I'm so happy to be back; I got locked out of my blog and it's taken all this time to find my way back in.  Huge thanks to my husband, Steve, for not giving up!

Here's my newest painting, it's still in progress and needs work but I wanted to post it as it's my newest work.

Welcome to the Cup Series.  I had so much fun painting my favorite cup that I've decided to do a series of small paintings using the cup as the focus.  As you can see, this one incorporates a plate.

 

I'm looking forward to seeing where this takes me, usually don't like to paint the same subject over and over but for some reason I'm enjoying this.

I'm currently participating in a monthly Challenge Painting hosted by Dee Sanchez, a wonderful artist in Albuquerque.  She put a group of artists together and we all agreed to do our version of the reference photograph she sends us each month.

 

This painting is one of those challenges and the reference photo just happened to be one of my husband's images.  Steven Bundy Photography.

 

Orange is one of my favorite colors and the vibrant colors of the reference photo against the snow was both beautiful and challenging.

Here's one of my newest paintings.  It has a looser more free style that I've been shooting for.  This little study shows me that I'm there.

 

A friend and I decided to do an "Almost Daily Painting" this new year; so we're painting away.  Hopefully I'll be able to keep my blog more up-to-date.

Our First Snow - Taos, New Mexico

Those of you who live in areas of the country that have snow in the winter might not understand my excitement at our first snow - please bear with me.  This is new to me.

Yesterday it snowed all day and was wonderful to watch.  At some point during the night the clouds went away and without that cover it got COLD!  A lot colder than it was when it was actually snowing.  This morning at 7:30 am it was sunny and bright and minus 12 degrees.

Late this afternoon it got up to 30 degrees, most of the snow in town was melting - all the cars had pretty much cleared the roads, at least the main ones.  However, as the sun went down and it got colder the wet patches turned to ice making walking very challenging.

I've never lived in an area where I had to contend with snow - southern California only has two weather options, nice and even nicer .  You never have to consider the weather when making plans; it's always OK to go outside.

Welcome to the mountains of northern New Mexico.  The weather is always something to take into account.  The saying "if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes" is true!  Taos is not a very big place and the weather can be different depending upon which part of town you're in.  It really is amazing. When it started snowing the Taos groups on Facebook were active with posts about what was happening in different neighborhoods.  Strangely we got snow in downtown before the north parts of Taos.

This winter, my first "real" winter, will be a huge learning curve for me.  I'm not sure how it will go because I've never been a big fan of snow.  I want to learn to love it, the state has been in a drought for a couple of years and the Rio Grande could really use the water - so like everyone else around here I'm praying for rain and lots of snow.  Also, Taos is a major ski destination, the tourists/skiers are very important to our economy - so please Universe, send us lots of beautiful powder and get those skiers up on the mountain.

I've been saying that at the first sign of snow I would head into my studio and come out in the spring with a new body of work.  I'm not going outside!  Happily, I currently have 5 paintings in various stages of completion as well as ideas for at least 5 more.  The new ideas involve fairly large canvases so I have more than enough to keep me busy for awhile.

Since I don't have anything painting-wise to show yet - I'll include pictures of snow and a short video;  made with my iPad yesterday - I love my iPad.

Hi - I haven't posted anything in a very long time because we made the move to New Mexico.

Due to all the work involved in totally changing your life I haven't been painting until recently.  To get back in the flow I'm participating in an online painting group of New Mexico artists.  Our fearless leader, Albuquerque artist Dee Sanchez, provides a picture and everyone in the group paints their version then submits a picture which Dee posts to a blog.  Its brand new, so far we've done one painting and are on our second.  This is my latest.  I'm very happy with the way it turned out - hope you like it too.

Here's my newest painting, an ode to Wayne Thiebaud, a long-time favorite artist.  I've admired his style and decided to give it a try - I'm so happy with the result that I plan to spend some time on these seemingly easy one character still life subjects.

It looks simple and seems easy but can be deceptively challenging in practice.  I enjoyed this painting from start to finish and since it was done as a study - a practice piece just for me - the pressure was off.  Clearly I must find a way to get my mind into that attitude for every painting.  Just relax and enjoy the process, get over myself.  :o)
